Edgar Wood Academy

Edgar Wood Academy is a vibrant and happy school, committed to working with the Middleton and Heywood communities to help every student belong, achieve, and thrive. As part of the Altus Education Partnership, we believe every child, whatever their background, should have the chance to belong, to achieve, and to become the very best version of themselves, including students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and additional or complex needs.
Edgar Wood Academy fosters a thirst for knowledge and a keenness to learn, alongside a strong focus on employment skills and future opportunities, including careers events, employer engagement, and apprenticeship pathways, helping every student prepare for work and lead happy, fulfilling lives. In June 2026, Edgar Wood Academy was recognised by Ofsted as meeting the expected standard across every area assessed, with safeguarding fully met, with inspectors noting the school is "bolstered by clear support and effective challenge from the trust and governors" and is "going from strength to strength."
Ofsted's inspectors also heard directly from pupils, who told them they "feel listened to and supported" and "trust that staff will not give up on them," with many citing their teachers as the best thing about school. Staff preparing pupils for their GCSEs were found to have "suitable training and support, both from within the trust and from external specialists," helping the school's first-ever Year 11 cohort thrive.

Where places are available, they will be offered unless this would adversely affect the efficient provision of education to existing students at Edgar Wood Academy. If a year group is full, parents/carers may request that their child is placed on the waiting list and have the right to appeal.
Appeals for in year applications will be heard within 30 school days of the appeal being received. You will be sent notification of your appeal hearing together with a copy of the Academy’s case at least 10 school days in advance of the hearing.
